Curriculum Vitae

As well as wearing the hats of writer, publisher and radio talk show host, I am primarily a private literary consultant and artistic mentor, specializing in fiction and creative non-fiction. I started life in Richmond, in West London, but have lived in the USA for three decades. I conduct consultations in a safe, intimate location in south Minneapolis, which is on a bus route, and has easy parking. My clients are at all levels of literary development and genre, and my fee structure is flexible and negotiable.

TEACHING

In addition to nearly thirty years of coaching writers one-on-one I’ve taught at all age levels with The University of Minnesota, COMPAS writers-in-the-schools, The Loft and various other colleges and arts oriented organizations and language schools. I’ve taught poetry, fiction, expository writing, drama, literature and mythology.

PUBLISHING & EDITING

I founded two literary magazines during the 1980s, and in 2005 founded Scarletta Press, Inc., where I currently hold the position of Publisher. I also started The Queue, a reality-based editorial service to help writers who are serious about their manuscripts. In the summer of 2009, I will launch, with some very bright colleagues, a new critique service for writers called AuthorScope.marxsm1

PERSONAL

I used to be a distance runner in the Clydesdale division, but I haven’t been running as much lately, which shows in my waistline. The most recent marathon I attempted was Marthon de Medoc, in France in 2007; I used to play rugby, but have developed some sense in middle-age; and, I continue, inexplicably, to remain a fanatical fan of the ‘unfashionable’ Southend United. I travel as much as I can and read like maniac.
